DIY wedding date sign

Salutations!

I have a fun little project today that will segue (at a later date) into a larger project that's been in the works for several months. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, m'kay?

Right now it's all about Adversity Day. Because it's today!

Today marks seventeen years of Phil and Andi avoiding death at each other's hands. If you missed my other Adversity Day posts, you can see them here and here and here!

Remember when I stole a bunch of rough-sawn cedar from our neighbor and we made amazing things out of it? Like our Pot Farm? And our DIY Headboard? And our Trellis of all Time?

We still have scads left over, and since neither Phil nor I can ever remember when or why we got married, I thought I'd make us a little sign to mark that blessed event.

At least it will remind us of when we got married, if not why.

Phil cut four boards and used his Kreg jig to screw them together. I slapped together some type I liked and printed it out. I'm pretty sure I got the date right. I sure hope so, otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of the project, and this blog post can go straight into the "fail" column.

Here's the backside because someone inevitably wants to see a backside.

I'm quite sure your eagle eyes noticed the graphite paper I had placed beneath my typography in the very first picture. I'll wait while you scroll back up.

I whitewashed the front (brushed on watered-down white paint), then proceeded to trace all the letters onto the board.

What? The letters look blurry? You've obviously been in the sauce, because it's ludicrous to suggest I have.

And yes, I realize there's a crack on the front side (when the crack is supposed to be on the backside). Phil wanted to fix the crack, but I think it's quirky and imperfect. Just like our marriage.

Now it's time to begin the tedious process of painting the letters. The black paint is the same I used on Dutch and Rose, and the red is the same I used on Buffet

This little project has nearly pushed me over the edge into purchasing a Silhouette, because placing vinyl has got to be easier than painting these hateful little letters with a tiny, hateful, spiteful, little paint brush.

Unless, of course, Silhouette wants to give me a freebie. Or Cricut. I'm not fussy.

After impatiently waiting for the paint to dry, I did a little light sanding/distressing (or, as I like to call it, knocking down the high spots and smoothing out the painted letters so the ragged edges aren't quite so in-your-face). I really liked how clear wax looked on the sign I made last year, so I thought I'd give it a go on this one as well.

Who is that young couple in that picture?

I'm not sure, but this middle-aged couple is going to party like it's 1999!

Happy Adversity Day!

  1. Very cool Andi and Phil!!! Happy ... every day! ;)
FYI... the paint is faster... buying all the vinyl (or making a stencil), transfer tape, blah blah blah... I hate to admit I have had a Silhouette for a year and haven't used it. Your sign looks wonderful! :)))
Happy today to us all, Christina in FL

  8. I like the ragged edges. Vinyl's too perfect. I'm a little jealous that you got married in '99.
